"When Oil Becomes an Alternative Identity"

Glass aquarium filled with crude oil, 27.56 × 27.56 × 27.56 inches.  covered with painted and colored pages from old books.

With the discovery of oil in Iraq in 1927, the country's identity shifted, becoming synonymous with its vast petroleum wealth. This economic prioritization gradually eclipsed its legacy as the cradle of civilizations, where art, culture, and scientific advancements once flourished.

"Crude Oil" serves as a metaphorical representation of oil’s dominance over knowledge. The piece emits a strong, pungent odor, unsettling visitors with its intensity. This discomfort is intentional, forcing the audience to confront the paradox. The very substance that repels them is the same treasure the world relentlessly fights over. Through this sensory experience, the artwork provokes reflection on the enduring tension between material wealth and cultural heritage.
