IOM Bags: Luggage of Exile
For thousands of Iraqi refugees immigrating to the United States, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) not only determined their destination but also imposed strict limits on what they could bring. Many, embarking on their first-ever journey abroad, had to comply with specific luggage restrictions: each passenger was allowed only two bags, each weighing no more than 50 pounds (23.5 kg), with dimensions of 60 × 80 × 20 cm (31.5 × 23.6 × 7.8 inches). These regulations became so ingrained in the refugee experience that luggage stores in transit countries like Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon began mass-producing standardized "IOM bags" to meet the overwhelming demand. The term "IOM" became more than just an organization; it became synonymous with the measured weight of a life uprooted. This installation features two of the ten bags my family and I carried on our journey to the United States—witnesses to the struggle of exile, migration, and the search for belonging. These bags, once mere containers of necessities, now hold the untold stories of what was left behind and what was carried forward.
