Mamdooh

Mixed Media (Oil, Acrylic, Pastel, Charcoal and ashes)
4 panels, each 36.61 × 25.2 inches

Mamdooh was one of my dearest friends, a gifted Iraqi portrait artist whose talent and spirit touched many. On July 23, 2005, a car bomb exploded in Karrada, Baghdad, claiming the lives of many. After a week of struggling against death, Mamdooh succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a void that could never be filled. This artwork consists of four vertically arranged paintings, forming a sequence that reflects his presence, absence, and remembrance.

The first panel is a half-portrait of Mamdooh, painted in an expressionist style, capturing his essence and physical appearance.

The second panel presents a ghostly, transparent figure, a reflection of his character, vibrant yet fleeting, painted in rich, luminous hues.

The third panel is a chaotic composition, painted using the remaining ashes from the exploded car and charcoal, symbolizing his departure and the void he left behind.

The fourth panel is a blank white canvas, open to participation, awaiting the touch of the audience.

Unlike traditional artworks, where touching is prohibited in galleries and museums, this piece invites viewers to become part of the creation process. I ask participants to place their hands on the third panel, allowing their palms to absorb the black stains of ash and charcoal, a metaphor for the darkness of loss, then wipe their hands onto the fourth panel,  to clean them; leaving behind fingerprints that collectively shape the final image.

This piece is not just a tribute to Mamdooh but a call to action, a reminder that restoring peace and beauty in the world is a shared responsibility. Each fingerprint represents a human touch, a silent promise that we all play a role in rebuilding what has been lost. Together, we can turn emptiness into meaning, because many hands, united, can bring light into the darkest spaces.
